Artist's Notes: After several months of sexual segregation during fawn rearing months, whitetails begin to intermingle in late summer and early autumn once again. This time period alters deer travel patterns, food sources, and brings about the most interesting aspects of the whitetail deer life cycle. The late summer and early autumn months establishing deer rank in the social system as the velvet covered antlers begin to harden. Social ranks are challenged, and do change as younger bucks grow to mature heavy antlered deer. Breeding rights are the reward for the highest ranking whitetail bucks in the herd.
